Enterotomy
Incision in the wall of the intestine, generally performed to eliminate foreign bodies in it.
Splenectomy
Surgical procedure that completely removes the damaged or diseased spleen. The spleen helps the body fight germs and infections.
General surgery
Pyometra
Serious uterine condition that generally affects middle-aged and older females (more common in dogs than in cats). Ovariohysterectomy is the best course of treatment.
Prolapse of the eye
It's when the eye comes out of its orbit and cannot be reinserted, since it is trapped between the eyelids. Usually due to trauma. The treatment consists of the reintroduction of the eyeball under general anesthesia.
Uterine prolapse
Expulsion of the uterus through the vulva, through the cervix. Usually seen in pets shortly after giving birth.
Gastric dilatation-volvulus
Frequent syndrome in dogs of large and giant breeds. Characterized by abnormal accumulation of gas inside the stomach, gastric distention and rotation that results in shock and multi-organ dysfunction. Medical and surgical therapy is necessary, as well as intensive monitoring after surgery.
Tracheostomy
Temporary or permanent opening in the trachea surgically created in an emergency to facilitate airflow. It can be done in case of obstructions or preventively before surgery.
Tracheotomy
Surgery in which an incision is made in the trachea to remove foreign bodies, take samples, or facilitate airflow.
Thoracotomy
Surgical opening of the chest. It is done to evaluate and treat lung and heart problems.
sternotomy media
An incision over the sternum used to perform cardiac or thoracic surgery.
sternotomy media
An incision over the sternum used to perform cardiac or thoracic surgery.
Median sternotomy
Incision over the sternum used to perform cardiac or thoracic surgery.
Pericardiectomy
Surgery performed to remove part or all of the sac that surrounds the heart to prevent accumulation of fluid that affects its function
Lung lobectomy
Surgery to remove an affected part of a lung.
Thoracic surgery
Amputation
Removal of extremities. They occur either due to an accident or serious illness. Once the procedure is done and with some rest, the pet can return to its normal activities.
External fixation appliances
Highly versatile orthopedic appliances that can replace the function of plates and pins in some cases, are inexpensive, easy to apply, and often require much less time to install.
Biopsy
Minimally invasive diagnostic technique. It consists of obtaining a small portion of tissue to analyze it or, on the contrary, to remove a tumor.
Orthopedics
TTA
Tibial Tuberosity Advancement is an advanced technique for trauma and orthopedic treatment after anterior cruciate ligament rupture in dogs. This injury occurs very commonly in dogs of all breeds and sizes, due to traumatic or degenerative causes. It's a surgery that perfectly repairs and corrects the injury.
Osteosynthesis
Surgical treatment for fractures in which they are reduced and fixed through the implantation of devices such as plates, nails, screws, wires and needles, among others.
Femoral head and neck excision
Indicated in dogs of all ages with degenerative joint disease, the head and neck of the femur are amputated to eliminate friction pain and to form a pseudo-articulation.
Tumors & oncology
Chemotherapy
Treatment option with very satisfactory results in some types of cancer. It consists of a series of drugs with toxic effects on tumor cells administered intravenously, subcutaneously, topically or orally.
Mastectomy
Technique used to remove the mammary glands and associated tissue on one side of the midline, due to the presence of multiple benign or malignant masses.
Reproductive control
OSH
Surgery in which the ovaries and uterus are removed in a sterile manner.
Neutering
Operation to remove the gonads (testicles and ovaries). Provides sterility and a longer life for the pet.
Dental health
Teeth extraction
May be required if the pet suffers from advanced periodontitis, under general anesthesia. It can be done at the same time as another treatment and is preceded by a thorough examination of the mouth and teeth.
Cleft lip
Congenital defect where there is a connection between the oral and nasal cavities due to an incomplete closure of the lip. The treatment is a reconstructive surgery of the lip (cheiloplasty) to restore the separation between the cavities.
Dental cleaning
Removes tartar, prevents infections and bad breath, and removes any remaining dirt. It’s performed with ultrasound and dental polishing equipment equal to those of any dentist, now adapted for pets.
Palatoplasty
Surgery in which the elongated soft palate is folded to the correct length, instead of cutting it completely. It does not press on the laryngeal area and allows the patient to close their mouth when eating and drinking naturally, without the risk of choking.
Rhinoplasty
Having narrow nostrils can complicate breathing, so in this surgery a section of nasal cartilage is removed to give more space for air flow
Healing
Procedure performed on the wound to prevent and control infection and promote healing. It is an aseptic technique, so sterile material must be used, necrotic tissue and foreign bodies must be removed, and the infection must be identified and eliminated.
Debridement
Removal of dead or damaged tissue from a wound to improve the healing process. It can be done using different techniques, including surgery or chemical treatments.
Drainage
A device for removing blood, pus, or other fluids from a patient that exert pressure on the surgical site, as well as on nearby organs, vessels, and nerves.
Wound management
Resection
Surgical operation that consists of totally or partially separating one or several organs or tissues of the body.
Bandaging
Placement of a bandage or other pieces of canvas in a certain area to cover skin lesions and immobilize or protect the extremities.
Pathology
Ear canal ablation
Procedure to eliminate ear infection and pain. The entire ear canal is extracted, the middle ear is opened, and the infected tissue is removed. Hearing loss occurs in the ear that undergoes surgery.
Scrotal ablation
Necessary in case of neoplastic pathologies of the scrotum, severe trauma, abscesses, ulcerations or ischemia.
Partial amputation of the penis
This intervention is performed to remove tumor lesions on the penis or foreskin and consists of the total removal of the affected area along with a safety margin.
Caudectomy
Surgical removal of an animal's tail that may be required for a variety of reasons. Significantly more common in dogs.
Partial caudectomy
Surgical removal of a section of an animal's tail.
Cecectomy
Surgical procedure in which the cecum is completely removed. It can be performed in cases of rupture or a tumor.
Cystopexia
Surgical fixation of the bladder to the abdominal wall, usually as a treatment for a cystocele.
Cystotomy
Surgical incision in the bladder to remove bladder or urethral stones, locate masses and perform a biopsy, or repair ureters
Cholecystectomy
Surgery to completely remove the gallbladder. It is the most common method to treat different pathologies of this organ, indicated when the gallbladder is the main cause of a disease (or there are serious or recurrent structural changes).
Colopexy
Surgery to join part of the colon with the wall of the abdomen. It is done to prevent part of the rectum from coming out of the anus for various reasons.
Drainage of prostatic cyst
The drainage procedure depends on the size and location of the cyst: the treatment for small cysts is castration; large cysts require castration, draining, resection, or emptying.
Enteroenteropexy
Fixation of an intestinal segment with another intestinal segment.
Enteropexy
Fixation of an intestinal segment to the abdominal wall.
Enterotomy
Incision in the wall of the intestine, generally performed to eliminate foreign bodies in it.
Entropion
Abnormality of the eyelid in which it rolls inward towards the eye, causing the eyelashes to rub against the cornea. It causes from constant tearing and some pain, to corneal ulcers and loss of sight. Surgery for its correction must be performed in adults, unless it is very serious in puppies.
Enucleation
Surgical removal of the eyeball and a section of the optic nerve, when the eye is irrecoverable due to trauma. There is no need for lifelong treatment or care of the area, after healing.
Esophagotomy
Surgery to remove foreign bodies from the esophagus through an incision. The tissues are inspected and explored for additional injuries or foreign bodies.
Esophagostomy
Operation in which an opening is created that communicates the esophagus with the outside in order to feed the patient through it
Sthaphylectomy
Resection of excess soft palate, usually given in brachycephalic dogs. Some signs are exercise intolerance or breathing problems, although nausea, coughing and vomiting may also occur.
Phallopexy
Consists of suturing the body of the penis and the adjacent surface of the foreskin mucosa, to avoid many potential complications.
Partial gastrectomy
Partial removal of the stomach. Currently, its main applications are in the treatment of gastric tumors.
Gastropexy
Procedure in which the stomach is attached to the abdominal wall. It can be used to prevent diseases or as a treatment for them.
Gastrostomy
