If there’s one thing all of us with pets at home can agree on it is that seeing them sick is never easy, but when there is blood involved, it is certain it’s time to start looking for help. At least that was the case with Vaqueros’s owners (Spanish for cowboy), this little pomeranian behind bars who’s incredibly lucky to have them around.

Why did he come to us? His foster parents brought him when they noticed he was vomiting a lot… and that there was blood in his stool. After a couple of tests we were able to diagnose Vaquero with ehrlichiosis, a potentially fatal disease if not treated immediately. With signs like fever, lethargy, hemorrhages or even sudden seizures, it can cause anemia, affect the bone marrow and the immune system.

Luckily, it can be treated with a series of antibiotics, so we started Vaquero’s treatment as soon as possible. After two days of hospitalization, this lovely little dog was a lot better. Certainly good enough for us to send him back home to continue his treatment there.
Vaquero kept on sharing some quality time with his family, eating and drinking like nothing ever happened to him. For someone who faced a lethal disease, he’s not looking too bad, we have to say.
